A Russian drone launched at Ukraine struck an apartment block in Galati, eastern Romania, injuring two people. The incident drew swift condemnation from NATO and EU officials. US ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that allies stand with Romania and will defend every inch of its territory. Retired Romanian general Dan Grecu suggested the drone may have been jammed during a Russian strike on Ukraine, causing it to stray accidentally into Romanian airspace. Romania’s defence minister confirmed the drone was a Geran-2 type that spent four minutes in national airspace before radar detection. Military forces considered interception but judged it too hazardous. NATO secretary general Mark Rutte spoke with Romania’s president and reaffirmed alliance solidarity, noting Russia’s actions endanger all and must end. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas called the breach a serious violation of sovereignty. Leaders from Lithuania, Latvia and Austria also expressed support for Romania and criticised Moscow. Romania summoned the Russian ambassador and convened its national security council. The president described the event as a direct result of Russia’s war on Ukraine and pledged proportionate measures while stressing that NATO membership precludes any transfer of conflict to Romanian citizens.
