The newly formed United Democratic Front government in Kerala has declared plans to establish two additional medical colleges, one in Thiruvananthapuram and another in Haripad within Alappuzha district. Leaders see the Thiruvananthapuram project, first proposed under a previous Congress administration, as a matter of prestige after it was rejected by later Left-led governments. Health Minister K. Muraleedharan stated that the administration intends to proceed regardless of past opposition. Proponents argue that expanding the current colleges in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha is not feasible and suggest converting existing hospitals into advanced care and research centers. The proposed Thiruvananthapuram college would be developed at the General Hospital in the Vattiyoorkavu constituency represented by the minister, while the Haripad site lies in the constituency of Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala. Kerala already maintains one medical college in each of its fourteen districts, though several opened more than a decade ago still lack adequate infrastructure, faculty, and support staff. Public health specialists warn that the state’s healthcare system faces severe strain from high patient loads and insufficient funding for recruitment and upgrades. They contend that creating new institutions risks diverting resources from existing ones that require urgent reinforcement. Additional concerns include low salaries, limited research opportunities, and frequent transfers that discourage young doctors from joining medical colleges. During the previous government’s term, the health sector drew widespread criticism over shortages of medicines and equipment as well as reports of negligence. Observers maintain that reinforcing the current network of public facilities should take precedence over new construction.
