CPI(M) and CPI leaders in Tamil Nadu have rejected claims by Congress Rajya Sabha nominee Praveen Chakravarty regarding a new political grouping. On June 5, 2026, state secretaries P. Shanmugam and M. Veerapandian stated that no consultation had occurred about forming the Tamil Nadu Social Justice Progressive Alliance, which Chakravarty described as including TVK, Congress, VCK, IUML, CPI and CPI(M). Congress, holding five assembly seats, nominated Chakravarty on June 4 for a Rajya Sabha vacancy allocated by ally TVK. Shanmugam called the claim presumptuous and noted the party had already clarified its outside support for the TVK government. Veerapandian termed the inclusion of Left parties without discussion politically incorrect and unacceptable. He added that the parties had contested polls within the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance and chose outside support for TVK solely to honour the electoral outcome and limit gubernatorial intervention. Veerapandian confirmed the CPI remains part of the DMK alliance and will decide future ties closer to elections while ruling out any partnership with the BJP.
