Annette Bramley recalls her daughter Holly as family-focused and fond of animals. She loved small creatures and even admired orangutans. During Holly’s abusive marriage to Nicholas Metson, he exploited this interest. He purchased a puppy then attempted to kill it by placing it in a washing machine at their Lincoln home. After Holly saved the animal, he drowned it in a bath. Over seven years he also harmed multiple hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs. Bramley believes Metson used threats against pets to control Holly. She recognized the connection between animal cruelty and domestic violence. When police arrived, the family immediately suspected harm to Holly rather than an accident. Prosecutors called the March 2023 killing twisted and barbaric. Metson dismembered Holly’s body into over 200 pieces, later found by a passerby. Bramley now advocates for Holly’s Law to bar repeat animal abusers from obtaining pets and to highlight links between animal and domestic abuse. She proposes an animal abuse register allowing police to share details on offenders to prevent further acquisitions. Research shows strong ties between pet abuse and domestic violence, with some offenders using animals for coercion. UK wildlife crime data linked 27 percent of cases to domestic abuse. The government has funded studies on these connections and plans collaboration with veterinarians to identify non-accidental injuries. Bramley urges training for vets to recognize repeated injuries as potential warning signs. Mark Randell of Naturewatch Foundation supports the campaign, noting many domestic abuse incidents involve pets and that disclosure could aid safeguarding. He calls for greater attention to animal cruelty within efforts against violence toward women and girls. Metson had a history of harming animals since childhood and was known to the RSPCA but faced no prior prosecution. Bramley continues her efforts to prevent similar cases.
