The Reserve Bank of India is examining a plan to introduce polymer currency notes, Governor Sanjay Malhotra stated on Friday. The proposal is still in its initial phase. It follows an earlier suggestion nearly ten years ago to issue plastic notes, driven by higher printing costs for paper currency and growing volumes of discarded notes. In February 2014, authorities told Parliament that one billion ten-rupee plastic notes would be tested in five cities chosen for geographic and climatic variety: Kochi, Mysore, Jaipur, Shimla and Bhubaneswar.
