The Trinamool Congress responded on Tuesday to reports of internal dissent following its recent electoral setback in West Bengal. Party leaders stated they were not concerned about departures and emphasized their connection to the people of the state. A group of rebel members, reportedly led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking to align with the NDA. The group claimed backing from around 20 MPs, though party officials disputed the figure. This followed earlier reports that 60 of the party’s 80 MLAs had challenged the choice of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as assembly leader. At a Delhi press event, MP Kalyan Banerjee said the party welcomed committed members and drew strength from its workers and supporters. He noted that opponents might hold official power and resources, but the party retained its core backing. Banerjee described those meeting with BJP figures as effectively aligned with that party. He urged rebels to explain their actions directly to local workers who had supported them in past campaigns. The MP also questioned why any concerns had not been raised earlier, noting that the leaders had campaigned under the party symbol and leadership. Reports differ on the exact number of MPs involved, with some sources citing 14 and others 12. Banerjee added that the MPs had previously expressed support for the leadership without voicing major issues. He suggested that those with differing views should resign and seek fresh public approval, citing one former member as an example.
