A Criminal Investigation Department team arrived Tuesday at the Kolkata home of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, which also serves as the Trinamool Congress headquarters, to investigate claims that signatures of party legislators were forged. The probe concerns a document sent to the assembly speaker seeking recognition of the Leader of the Opposition.

A separate CID group reached the residence of Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s national general secretary and nephew of Mamata Banerjee, to carry out searches. Officers, supported by local police and women constables, entered the Harish Chatterjee Street premises after a short delay and began examining records.

The action follows notices issued by the agency and a statement from Abhishek Banerjee indicating that legislator signatures had been gathered at the party office. He has been asked to appear before investigators by 5 pm on Tuesday.
