As performers vote on a new contract, union officials report progress with studios on artificial intelligence issues since the 2023 strike. SAG-AFTRA lead negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland credited improved relations to a shift in studio attitudes. The union represents 160,000 members in film, television and video games. Members are deciding on an agreement approved by the board this month, before the current deal ends in June. Crabtree-Ireland described the talks as more cooperative, saying the 2023 action helped reset relations despite its difficulties. Ratification would prevent another costly shutdown like the 118-day strike that halted productions and cost studios billions. AI remains a key worry, with tools advancing rapidly in recent years. The new pact adds protections without banning the technology. Digital replicas of performers require consent and fair pay. Limited synthetic characters are allowed only in unusual cases when not based on real individuals. Studios must now consult the union and show added value before using such elements. Voting ends June 4.
