OpenAI’s agentic coding platform Codex has recorded a 27-fold increase in active users in India since the start of 2026. The country now ranks among the company’s top five markets for Codex adoption and top 10 for engagement. Pragya Misra, head of strategy and global affairs for India at OpenAI, said at Mumbai Tech Week that the company is moving from question-and-answer models to reasoning systems and then to agentic tools that perform tasks independently. More than a quarter of Codex requests in India now involve non-coding work, indicating wider use beyond software development. Misra noted that the platform allows non-technical users to create apps and websites via natural language. It also shortens development cycles and automates routine work. Data from OpenAI Signals showed that coding-related Codex use in India was nearly three times the global average in February. The company has partnered with TCS, Infosys and Razorpay on engineering and automation projects. India is also one of OpenAI’s largest markets overall and its second-largest for ChatGPT users. On May 11, OpenAI launched a deployment company to assist enterprises with large-scale AI adoption, including direct involvement in implementation and workflow design.
