The effort to name Tata Sons’ next chairman has started, shortly after N Chandrasekaran announced he would not pursue reappointment at the end of his term in February 2027. This move has sparked a contest for leadership at India’s biggest conglomerate.

Selecting a successor for the 158-year-old group is now the board’s main task, as veteran executives and members of the founding family appear among the candidates.

Tata Steel managing director and CEO T V Narendran is viewed as a strong prospect. He joined the company in 1988 and has led its growth while improving finances. He ranks among the executives regularly consulted by Noel Tata, along with Tata Power CEO Praveer Sinha. No official frontrunner has been confirmed.

Early names also include Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles CEO Shailesh Chandra, Tata Chemicals CEO Ramakrishnan Mukundan, and Tata Sons CFO Saurabh Agrawal.

Noel Tata’s children Neville and Maya have joined Tata Trusts as trustees, placing the next generation in focus. Neville, aged 32, helped develop value-fashion brand Zudio, while Maya gained digital commerce experience at Tata Digital. Reports indicate Noel may advance one child for the top role rather than seek it himself.

Chandrasekaran’s resignation letter shows the departure involved complications. He noted that a proposed extension had waited six months and failed due to opposition from one board member. Reports cite tensions with Noel Tata over profitability and funding for loss-making units. Consolidated net profit dropped 35 percent to 266 billion rupees in the year to March 2026 amid losses at Air India, Tata Digital and Tata Electronics.

The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust has respected the decision and pledged support for a smooth handover. Trustees have approved a resolution to create a Selection Committee for the successor.

The outcome affects major investments made under Chandrasekaran, including India’s first semiconductor plant and efforts to supply Apple. Focus now rests on the August 18 board meeting, where the main trusts are set to shape the committee. Tata Sons has about seven months to appoint its next chairman.
