Royal Challengers Bengaluru all-rounder Romario Shepherd recently shared details of his progression from a modest upbringing in Linden, Guyana, to playing for a major IPL team. He discussed his initial experiences with cricket, the impact of Dwayne Bravo, his rise in limited-overs formats, and the dynamics in the RCB team.
Named in honor of the renowned footballer Romario, Shepherd described his childhood games using makeshift equipment, as noted in an RCB statement. He played in a limited space at home, crafting balls from wood and bats from coconut palms. Without protective gear and often barefoot, players had to shield their legs from impacts.
Shepherd entered structured cricket during his school days, though he was not initially recognized for powerful hitting. In his debut match, he made 129 runs over the full 40 overs without any sixes, focusing instead on placing the ball between fielders.
As he advanced in youth levels, Shepherd developed into a versatile athlete, drawing motivation from a prominent West Indian figure. He often heard radio broadcasts praising Dwayne Bravo for his all-around skills in batting, bowling, and fielding, aspiring to emulate him.
Shepherd’s prominence in shorter formats emerged in 2018 at the Caribbean Premier League, where his displays caught notice. He gained recognition for accurate yorkers and strong batting, with analysts like Ian Bishop highlighting his potential.
A memorable highlight from that year was his first delivery against Bravo, which he struck for a six into the stands. This was particularly meaningful given his respect for the veteran.
Shepherd’s career led him to the IPL with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Growing up, he followed RCB due to the presence of fellow West Indian Chris Gayle.
Commenting on his tenure with the side, Shepherd praised the supportive team atmosphere. He mentioned close bonds with players like Tim David, Phil Salt, Jamie Bethell, and Virat Kohli, noting Kohli’s humorous side away from the game despite his intense on-field demeanor.
Shepherd emphasized how veteran and emerging players create a positive setting, especially during extended periods away from home. He described the group as exceptional both during matches and in personal interactions.
Representing RCB has also connected Shepherd with a worldwide fanbase. He appreciated the opportunity provided by the franchise, which has elevated his profile. Even in international matches for West Indies, supporters chant for RCB, making it feel like more than a team but a close-knit community.
