Named in honor of the renowned footballer Romario, Shepherd described his childhood games using makeshift equipment, as noted in an RCB statement. He played in a limited space at home, crafting balls from wood and bats from coconut palms. Without protective gear and often barefoot, players had to shield their legs from impacts.
Shepherd entered structured cricket during his school days, though he was not initially recognized for powerful hitting. In his debut match, he made 129 runs over the full 40 overs without any sixes, focusing instead on placing the ball between fielders.
As he advanced in youth levels, Shepherd developed into a versatile athlete, drawing motivation from a prominent West Indian figure. He often heard radio broadcasts praising Dwayne Bravo for his all-around skills in batting, bowling, and fielding, aspiring to emulate him.
