Australian sprinter Gout Gout delivered a stunning performance in the 200m final at the national athletics championships in Sydney. Despite challenging windy conditions, he clocked a time of 19.67 seconds, setting a new national record with a legal tailwind of 1.7 m/s. This result surpassed his previous best of 20.02 seconds and marked the fastest time ever by an under-20 athlete, excluding one unratified mark. The achievement would have earned a bronze medal at the recent Paris Olympics and gold at the Sydney 2000 Games. It also outpaced the best 200m time run by Usain Bolt at the same age. Gout faced strong competition from Aidan Murphy, who finished second with 20.41 seconds, the second-fastest by an Australian and breaking the 20-second barrier for only the second time in the nation’s history since 1968. Murphy, 22, pushed Gout throughout the race, staying close until the final strides. Earlier, Gout had qualified with a time nearly half a second ahead of the field, but cooler temperatures and gusts affected the event. The victory occurred at Sydney Olympic Park, evoking memories of the 2000 Games, and reinforces Gout’s path toward potential success at the 2028 Los Angeles and 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Murphy’s effort, though overshadowed, highlighted his potential after years in the shadow of other sprinters.
