On April 12, 2026, the Congress party accused the central government of intending to shelve the caste census indefinitely. It further alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to revise the women’s reservation legislation to deceive the public.
Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, stated that the administration plans to modify Article 334-A, citing delays in caste census data availability. He pointed out that this ignores examples from Bihar and Telangana, where thorough caste surveys were finished in under six months.
