An organization representing IT workers, known as NITES, contacted the Ministry of Labour and Employment on Monday to request a thorough review of compliance with Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) guidelines at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The group also advocated for a broader evaluation of such standards in technology and IT-enabled services firms across Maharashtra, focusing on major international companies. This request follows accusations of sexual harassment and coerced religious conversion by eight women at TCS’s Nashik facility, which has sparked significant attention and worry. NITES called on the ministry to initiate a prompt and thorough inspection. India’s leading IT services provider stated on Sunday that it maintains a strict policy against any harassment or coercion, and confirmed the suspension of staff implicated in the Nashik incident. In its communication to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, NITES emphasized the need for an in-depth examination of POSH adherence throughout TCS operations, including the setup, autonomy, and operations of internal review panels. The group further requested a review of all sexual harassment reports filed, unresolved, or resolved in recent years, including measures implemented, and an assessment of how human resources and executives managed these issues to foster a secure environment. It also sought confirmation on whether staff were deterred from filing reports or faced repercussions for doing so. NITES stressed the importance of a statewide assessment of POSH compliance in IT and related sectors in Maharashtra, particularly among large global entities, and urged the issuance of firm guidelines to hold employers and leaders responsible for maintaining safe, legal, and respectful workplaces. The organization noted that IT workers play a vital role in sectoral and economic advancement, and they merit environments that are secure, honorable, and legally compliant. It appealed to the ministry to handle the issue with high priority to resolve the current situation and prevent future occurrences nationwide. Last week, authorities established a special team to investigate the complaints from the eight employees, who alleged mental and sexual mistreatment by superiors and inaction from human resources. Police have apprehended seven individuals, including the firm’s female HR manager. In response, TCS affirmed its enduring commitment to zero tolerance for harassment or coercion, emphasizing employee safety and well-being. The company reported taking immediate steps upon learning of the matter, suspending those under scrutiny during the inquiry, and pledged cooperation with law enforcement, with additional actions to follow the investigation’s outcome.
