Researchers in a study published in the International Journal of Research in Engineering and Science explain the biological immortality of the jellyfish species Turritopsis dohrnii. Through transdifferentiation, the mature medusa reverts to a youthful polyp stage during times of injury or environmental pressure. This reversal enables the creature to evade mortality and restart its development cycle indefinitely, unless it falls victim to predators or illness.
