Ex-Indian fast bowler Munaf Patel has cautioned the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about possible repercussions if it decides to dismiss head coach Gautam Gambhir. The ex-opening batsman assumed the prominent position following the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Over his almost two-year stint, Gambhir has produced varied outcomes and faced allegations of pressuring key players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to retire from Test matches.

Although Gambhir has secured three significant titles—the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup, and T20 World Cup—during his leadership, the national side’s difficulties in Test format during a period of change have prompted demands for his ouster.

Nevertheless, Munaf Patel, who was part of the 2011 World Cup champion team, has supported his ex-colleague against increasing scrutiny, indicating that the situation might deteriorate if Gambhir is let go.

“Keep in mind, removing a head coach such as Gautam Gambhir would make managing the team extremely challenging. He is straightforward, states facts directly, and that bothers some individuals. It’s well-known that if performance slips, he is bold enough to bench that athlete,” Munaf stated to the Times of India.

The retired bowler also noted that Gambhir’s habit of being honest has likely created adversaries in the cricket community.

“Handling personnel is crucial, and it’s tough. Attempt denying someone like Virat Kohli. Attempt denying Rohit Sharma. Consider how many opponents Gautam Gambhir is gaining simply to guide the national team?” he continued.

In the meantime, Munaf is presently the bowling instructor for Delhi Capitals in the current IPL campaign. The team holds the fifth spot with four points after an equal number of games.
