In February, during a tournament in Doha, Jannik Sinner was defeated in the quarterfinals by Jakub Mensik. This came shortly after his five-set loss to Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open semifinals. These setbacks raised questions about the form of the Italian player, who has won four Grand Slam titles and been a dominant force in men’s tennis alongside Carlos Alcaraz.

However, Sinner remained calm, stating that all players experience fluctuations in performance. He noted that after two strong years, a brief dip was not a concern.

Since then, Sinner has won 17 of his last 18 matches, dropping just one set while securing three consecutive ATP Masters 1000 titles. He triumphed at Indian Wells and Miami on hard courts, followed by victory at the Monte Carlo Masters on clay, where he defeated Alcaraz in straight sets and regained the world number one ranking.

Sinner attributed his success to daily improvements and adapting his playing style to different opponents. His coach, Darren Cahill, focused on enhancing his serve, leveraging his height for power and unpredictability. Sinner’s serve hold rate reached 94% during these tournaments, making it difficult for opponents to break him.

Additionally, Sinner has excelled in tiebreakers and used his strong forehand and backhand to dictate play from the baseline. In his match against Alcaraz on clay, he employed deep, spinning returns to counter his rival effectively.

Former top player Andy Roddick commented that the reaction to Sinner’s single loss highlighted the high expectations set by his own achievements.

With a narrow points gap in the rankings, the upcoming Madrid Open presents Sinner an opportunity to win a fifth straight Masters 1000 title. Looking ahead, the French Open in late May offers a chance for redemption after last year’s semifinal defeat to Alcaraz, potentially completing his collection of major titles.
