A 56-year-old woman from the West Midlands, who was in good physical health, chose to end her life at a Basel clinic in Switzerland. This decision came four years after her 23-year-old son died from choking on food, which deprived his brain of oxygen. The former caregiver had previously tried to end her life amid profound grief. The clinic’s founder labeled the act as a rational choice and confirmed it proceeded smoothly, aligning with her desires and after thorough mental evaluations. She informed her family, including siblings, of her plans and expressed a preference for such options to be legal in the UK. The nonprofit organization, established in 2019 by an advocate for the right to die, facilitated the process for a fee of £10,000. This event coincides with the failure of a proposed bill in England and Wales that aimed to permit assisted dying for terminally ill adults with less than six months to live, requiring approvals from doctors and a panel. The legislation, criticized as deeply problematic, did not advance to a vote in the upper house despite passing earlier stages in the lower house. Separately, in 2024, a 29-year-old woman in the Netherlands received permission for assisted dying due to severe psychological distress, following a multi-year review under a 2002 law.
