Dakshinpuri in South Delhi is facing a severe water shortage as temperatures in the capital rose above 45 degrees Celsius. Social media images displayed lines of empty containers in the neighborhood, with locals reporting no supply for months. Delhi has endured heatwave conditions recently, with temperatures surpassing 45 degrees in multiple zones, resulting in heat-related illnesses, dry weather, and warm nights. A resident in Ambedkar Nagar Sector-5 described the ongoing scarcity, noting that water arrives infrequently and often appears polluted. Reports indicate roughly 5,000 people across several blocks in Dakshinpuri are dealing with limited access. In Block 10, the situation has forced some domestic workers to seek permission to bathe at their places of employment. One worker explained convincing employers to allow showers and occasionally bringing a sibling along. Another local stated he had gone a week without a proper wash, emphasizing the difficulty in such heat where water is essential. Residents noted insufficient supplies even for drinking and have bought water for over a month. Many rely on a single tap at a nearby temple, where crowds gather with containers each evening, creating disorder. The water is frequently discolored, yet people collect it for toilet use. A Delhi Jal Board official stated that despite lower raw water inflows, efforts continue to minimize disruption, with about 6,500 tanker trips daily across affected zones and plans underway for improvements. Separately, at least 200 to 250 kilograms of fish died at Sanjay Lake in Trilokpuri after water levels dropped sharply and oxygen depleted due to high temperatures. A maintenance worker reported arriving to find the fish dead from the heat and low water. In other parts of Delhi, veterinarians observed rising cases of dehydrated birds and animals suffering from heat stress, with one facility handling around 20 bird cases daily, a 50 percent increase, mostly pigeons affected by infections linked to extreme conditions.
