Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed plans for a major defence package with Sweden during his visit. He stated that preparations include stronger support for combat aviation through Gripen fighter jets. Germany announced that the German-Netherlands Corps will serve as a tactical headquarters for Estonia and Latvia under NATO plans. Officials said the move strengthens alliance cohesion and deters Russia. Russia’s foreign minister Sergei Lavrov rejected comments by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas on possible demands toward Moscow. Kallas had suggested that limits sought by Russia on Ukrainian forces should apply equally to Moscow. Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Swedish prime minister Ulf Kristersson, with an announcement on air defence expected. Reports indicate Sweden may donate older Gripen models and negotiate sales of newer versions. EU ministers remain divided over appointing a single negotiator for talks with Russia. Austria’s foreign minister called for a chief negotiator to represent European interests. Luxembourg’s foreign minister suggested a team approach and preferred candidates from outside the immediate region. Lithuania and Estonia backed Kallas, stressing the need to increase pressure on Russia rather than focus on personalities. Kallas warned against discussing individuals instead of substance, describing it as a trap set by Russia. She stressed that negotiations require a coordinated strategy and that the EU must participate because sanctions involve European decisions.
