The Central Bureau of Investigation detained a retired judge at her Bhopal residence on Thursday after several hours of questioning, according to agency spokesperson Beena Yadav. Officers reached the home shortly after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled anticipatory bail previously issued by a local court. The former judge is scheduled for a medical check. The High Court overturned the bail order in the dowry harassment and death matter involving Twisha Sharma, reversing a sessions court decision from May 15. That earlier bail had been approved hours after police registered a case against the retired judge and her son, who is already in custody. Justice Devnarayan Mishra ruled after reviewing petitions from the victim’s father and the state government. The bench observed that certain injuries on the body were not consistent with removal from a ligature or transport to hospital, and one head wound occurred before death. The court noted the trial judge overlooked key allegations when granting bail. It quashed the order under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Dowry Prohibition Act. The victim’s family repeated claims of foul play following the ruling. During arguments, the state solicitor general stated the bail process raised doubts about proper consideration of facts, and the accused showed no remorse or cooperation. The CBI, which assumed the case from local police on May 25, supported cancellation of bail and highlighted the presence of two doctors during the initial autopsy. Counsel for the victim’s father argued the retired judge applied specialized training to alter evidence and the scene. A local court had transferred custody proceedings the previous day.
