Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Indian wrestlers on Thursday for their record-setting results at the 2026 U23 Asian Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam. He highlighted the achievements of the men’s freestyle and women’s wrestling squads, which captured team titles and produced India’s strongest overall medal count at the competition.
The Indian men’s freestyle team claimed the top position at the U23 Asian Wrestling Championships in Da Nang, Vietnam, securing the team championship trophy after finishing first.
India led the freestyle standings, placing ahead of Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan in second and third.
Modi praised the competitors for their strong results and offered well wishes for upcoming events.
Modi posted on X that the wrestlers delivered an outstanding performance. The men’s freestyle team earned nine medals with four golds, marking India’s best total at the U23 Asian Championships. The women’s team collected ten medals including six golds, while the Greco-Roman squad achieved its highest medal count with eight. He congratulated the athletes and wished them success ahead.
The overall Indian group finished with 27 medals, consisting of eleven gold, seven silver and nine bronze across freestyle, women’s wrestling and Greco-Roman events.
The winning freestyle team ended with nine medals: four gold, three silver and two bronze. Akshay T Dhere in the 57kg class and Vicky in the 97kg class won gold, followed by Kumar Mohit at 65kg and Chandermohan at 79kg.
