At least 21 people died and over 40 were rescued when a major fire erupted at a hotel in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning, according to officials. The blaze caused widespread panic as occupants rushed to flee the smoke-filled structure. The property, Flourish Stay B&B, had received a licence from the Delhi government under its Bed and Breakfast programme.

Several victims were foreigners, primarily from Central Asian and African nations, officials noted, warning the death toll could increase as some injured remain in critical condition, PTI reported.

Footage from the scene captured two women leaping from the building in an attempt to escape the flames and dense smoke. Their status remains unknown.

Eight fire engines were deployed to contain the fire and evacuate trapped individuals, an official statement confirmed. The Delhi Fire Service received the alert around 9 am.

A DFS official told PTI that the first response involved two water tenders, two water bowsers, a rapid response vehicle and additional units.

Injured people were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Reports indicate the hotel was authorised for only six rooms under the scheme but allegedly ran 25 rooms, some in the basement, prompting concerns over safety compliance. Three individuals were pulled from the basement area. Police have begun proceedings to register an FIR against the owner. The hotel reportedly had just one entry and exit point.

Authorities are investigating whether the premises possessed adequate fire safety equipment and a valid Fire NOC.

After the fire was put out, images showed the building heavily charred with severe damage across several floors. The cause remains under investigation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh to families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured from the PMNRF.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also conveyed sorrow, stating the government is monitoring the situation and providing necessary medical aid and support to affected families.
