Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s women’s football team on Sunday for winning the South Asian Football Federation Women’s Championship. He stated that the success would motivate more young athletes to pursue the sport going forward.
The side captured the title after seven years by overcoming defending champions Bangladesh 3-1 in the final at Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa on Saturday.
In a social media post, Modi commended the players for their strong showing across the tournament and extended best wishes for upcoming competitions.
India’s goals were scored by Pyari Xaxa in the 42nd minute, Sanfida Nongrum early in the second half, and substitute Lynda Kom Serto in the 82nd minute. Bangladesh replied through Ritu Porna Chakma in first-half stoppage time.
The hosts completed a perfect campaign by winning all four matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding just one. The result marked a record-extending sixth SAFF title and ended Bangladesh’s bid for a third straight crown.
