Police in Shamli detained a woman and her father on June 7, 2026, while charging nine individuals in an alleged case of religious conversion involving a 30-year-old man, according to a senior official. The detained persons are identified as Chandni Qureshi and her father Islam Qureshi. A medicine trader named Devraj Malik filed a complaint stating that his son Ayush Malik had been converted to Islam several years earlier on the promise of marriage to Chandni. The ceremony reportedly occurred in Delhi using falsified papers. Some Hindu activists, among them Swami Yashveer Maharaj, have warned of protests against the claimed unlawful conversion and called for firm measures. Authorities continue searching for the other suspects. Superintendent of Police N.P. Singh stated that a case was filed under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita including extortion, cheating, forgery and criminal intimidation, along with the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.
