Renowned bhangra artist Abrar Ul Haq has initiated legal proceedings regarding the claimed unauthorized transfer of rights to his music. He alleges that his well-known track was taken without permission and sold to prominent Indian film producers. The song, the popular bhangra number ‘Nach Punjaban’, gained widespread international recognition and was included in the recent Bollywood film Jugg Jugg Jeeyo, produced by Karan Johar. The movie used the track prominently in its promotional efforts. During an appearance on the Geo Podcast with host Mubashir Hashmi, Abrar Ul Haq stated he had never approved the song’s inclusion in the production and received no payment for its use. He noted that the film was heavily marketed around the track. A London-based music firm reportedly asserted ownership of several of his songs, including ‘Nach Punjaban’ and ‘Billo De Ghar’. This led to difficulties when he attempted to re-record older material and prepare for sessions with Coke Studio. The artist further claimed the company issued copyright claims that removed his videos from YouTube. He described receiving an unclear response when questioning the ownership, with the firm suggesting he consult a third party named Haroon. Abrar Ul Haq maintains he never transferred rights to anyone and accuses the company of creating false documents with forged signatures. He acknowledged the high costs of pursuing such cases in London but expressed confidence in his position, noting other South Asian musicians have faced similar issues. While open to creating a new version with different lyrics, he insists on retaining control of the original work, which he created primarily for enjoyment and to bring happiness rather than as a major commercial venture.
