Gaza health authorities reported at least five deaths and eight injuries from Israeli strikes across the territory in the past day. The ministry recorded 997 fatalities in Israeli operations since the October 2025 ceasefire with Hamas began. It added that 73,008 people, many women and children, have died in attacks on Gaza since October 2023, after the Hamas-led assault on southern Israel that killed about 1,200 and took 251 hostages.

A Guardian analysis noted that the temporary US-Iran deal leaves core regional problems untouched, leading experts to warn of possible renewed instability. The agreement mainly commits both sides to further talks, requires Washington to lift its naval blockade of Iran, and obliges Tehran to allow free shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

A Lebanon ceasefire forms part of the deal and currently holds, though analysts say such arrangements have proved fragile, as seen in Gaza where nearly 1,000 Palestinians have died since last year’s truce. Israel controls more than 60 percent of Gaza, Hamas keeps its weapons, and little progress has occurred on later phases including reconstruction.

Iran’s foreign minister said initial talks will cover the Strait of Hormuz, the blockade and reconstruction, with nuclear issues and sanctions addressed later. He described the memorandum as involving the United States, Israel, Iran and Hezbollah, and called for an immediate end to fighting on all fronts. New negotiations are scheduled to start Friday in Switzerland after the signing in Geneva.

Israeli operations in Lebanon have eased but are unlikely to stop completely. Israel’s prime minister said forces would remain in occupied areas. Hezbollah welcomed the deal as progress toward full withdrawal and said it would continue resistance until that goal is met.

Roughly $24 billion in frozen Iranian assets are expected to be released in four stages under the agreement.
