Major League Baseball criticized several San Francisco Giants players for writing Bible verses on their Pride Night caps during a game last week. The league marks Pride Month each June, with most teams holding events to recognize LGBTQ fans. The Giants, located in a city with a large LGBTQ population, typically emphasize such initiatives. Tensions have arisen because many players come from conservative or religious backgrounds. In Friday’s matchup against the Chicago Cubs, pitchers Landen Roupp and JT Brubaker inscribed Bible verses on their caps, while pitcher Sam Hentges declined to wear one. On Monday, MLB stated that the writing violated rules and issued warnings to the players. Roupp referenced a verse mentioning a rainbow, a Pride symbol, but said his action reflected his faith rather than malice. Hentges explained he felt pressured to participate in something he did not morally support, though he denied any hatred toward the LGBTQ community. Giants manager Tony Vitello noted players’ freedom to act according to their beliefs while praising the team’s inclusivity efforts. The Giants reaffirmed their commitment to Pride Night and apologized for any offense caused by individual choices.
