New Zealand lost early momentum on day one of the second Test against England. Devon Conway was caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper James Rew off Matt Fisher for his second wicket in Tests. The score moved to 9 for 0 after five overs. Jofra Archer bowled a maiden in the next over while Tom Latham left several deliveries outside off stump. In the following over Latham and Conway added three runs through the leg side. Archer maintained high speeds averaging 144.7 kph in his opening over, the quickest by an England bowler in a Test first over since records began in 2006. Conway later edged for two and struck a boundary. Fisher started with a maiden from the Vauxhall End, finding movement. Archer opened from the Pavilion End with three slips and a gully. Latham took a single before Conway faced several deliveries near 90 mph. England captain Joe Root led the team out under bright sunshine at The Oval. Anthems were sung before play began.
