SpaceX has launched a demonstration capsule for its confidential Starfall project into low Earth orbit using a Falcon 9 rocket. Few details have emerged about the flight or any future service, but earlier statements indicate Starfall is meant to return cargo produced in space, such as pharmaceutical compounds or semiconductor alloys.

The capsule lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, near 6:50 a.m. local time. The rocket’s booster stage later touched down on a floating platform in the Atlantic Ocean.

Public information on Starfall is limited. A May assessment by the Federal Aviation Administration described the project’s aim as the transport and delivery of goods through space. SpaceX has stated the system will support routine microgravity research and in-orbit manufacturing. The assessment also approved two re-entry landings for the test mission.

Unlike crewed spacecraft, the Starfall vehicle is built only for cargo. It is a windowless black cylinder about 3 meters wide and less than 1 meter tall, with room for a 1-tonne payload. The capsule divides into two sections after re-entry: an upper compartment holding the payload and a carbon-fiber heat shield below that uses compressed gas for controlled descent.

After launch the booster landed successfully, yet SpaceX has released no updates on the capsule’s time in orbit or its planned splashdown 1,300 kilometers off the California coast.

Smaller firms also pursue orbital manufacturing. Varda Space Industries has flown compact containers for pharmaceuticals, and Space Forge aims to produce semiconductors and alloys. Both operate at far smaller scale than Starfall.

SpaceX holds U.S. military contracts, and Starfall could support rapid delivery of smaller loads. The Pentagon’s Rocket Cargo program explores larger rockets for fast supply transport, while other firms have received study contracts for similar concepts.
