The BJP marked Balidan Diwas in Srinagar on June 23, 2026, to remember the death anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, who died in a Jammu and Kashmir jail in 1953. The party demanded an independent probe into the circumstances of his death. National general secretary Tarun Chugh questioned the legal basis for Mookerjee’s detention and noted that no such investigation had ever taken place. He was joined by state BJP president Sat Sharma and MP Anirban Ganguly at Tagore Hall. Chugh paid tribute to Mookerjee’s role in promoting national unity and recalled his campaign for full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India. He stated that the 2019 revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A completed that process. Chugh also asked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to explain why related records remain undisclosed and said the BJP would continue pressing for answers. Referring to the 1947 tribal invasion, he described widespread killings of Hindus, Kashmiri Pandits and Christians, along with violence against women, and criticised earlier administrations for inadequate documentation. He called for the release of archival material on those events.
