Independent studio A24 has formed a strategic alliance with Google DeepMind to create artificial intelligence tools aimed at the film and television production process. The arrangement includes roughly $75 million in funding from Google, giving A24 access to DeepMind’s research resources and technical systems. Researchers from the AI division will work directly with the studio on new production methods. The sum matches the level of backing A24 received from Thrive Capital in its latest funding round. The agreement explicitly excludes any sharing of A24’s film library or internal data, responding to widespread industry worries about copyrighted material being used for AI training. The collaboration stands out as a major link between an AI developer and a film studio while the entertainment sector weighs both the potential and risks of the technology. Other large studios have tested AI tools in production, yet some have also filed lawsuits over copyright and ownership issues. A24 Labs is focusing on supportive applications such as AI-generated storyboards to aid directors and creative staff rather than to automate their roles. Partner Scott Belsky stated that the studio seeks to improve artistic processes instead of simply cutting time and costs. The move occurs as media companies increase spending on generative AI across scriptwriting, visual effects and post-production while addressing concerns from creators and unions. Observers are expected to monitor the partnership closely for insights on integrating AI without undermining creative control or intellectual property rights.
