Prime Minister Narendra Modi took part in Seychelles National Day events marking 50 years of independence on Sunday. The Ministry of External Affairs stated he served as Guest of Honour, the first Indian Prime Minister to hold that role. During his three-day visit from June 27 to 29, India and Seychelles agreed on several measures to deepen cooperation.

Modi noted the celebrations honoured the progress made by Seychelles over five decades. He described India as a reliable partner supporting the country’s development through shared principles and stronger public connections.

India and Seychelles completed an umbrella line of credit agreement worth 1,250 crore rupees to fund priority projects. They also signed an extradition treaty to address cross-border crime and a memorandum on space cooperation for peaceful uses. The National Payments Corporation of India and the Central Bank of Seychelles finalised an accord to introduce the Unified Payments Interface in Seychelles.

Seychelles requested Indian help to create artificial intelligence and cybersecurity centres and to acquire an advanced light helicopter. Modi welcomed these ideas and said further talks would follow. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted Seychelles as an important partner in India’s MAHASAGAR vision and engagement with the Global South.
