Singapore authorities are investigating an Indian-origin businessman after around 400 Indian and Bangladeshi migrant workers were left without wages for several months. The director, identified as Ramu Palani Velu, reportedly disappeared before being located and returned to Singapore on June 26 to assist with inquiries. He has surrendered his passport.

Velu serves as director of seven companies, including VVR Plant Engineering, SK Industries and KPA Engineering, which are under scrutiny for substantial debts. The firms operate in air-conditioning, plumbing and construction services. The Singapore government has arranged alternative employment for the affected workers in similar sectors.

The situation surfaced after workers staged protests demanding more than two months of back pay. Community groups, including the Hindu Endowment Board and local temples, distributed essential supplies to those impacted.

Reports indicate Velu’s registered residential address in Hillview had been rented to others for two years. Creditors had previously visited the property seeking repayment. Earlier business records link him to an address in Marine Crescent.

Velu acquired VVR Plant Engineering, previously known as VMD Integrated, in 2025 from its former owners. The prior directors stated they were introduced to him through a third party during a family emergency and had limited knowledge of his background.
