The Indian Army plans to create specialized ‘Baaz Battalions’ to expand its remotely piloted aircraft capabilities. The effort focuses on improving battlefield surveillance, intelligence collection and swift response via a dedicated drone unit, according to defence officials.
Army sources confirmed the initiative, explaining that the new battalions will build on existing RPA flights and include trained specialists tasked with operating and maintaining the aircraft systems.
The decision follows operational insights from recent border tensions along the Line of Actual Control with China and effective drone use during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan last May.
The battalions will centralise expanding drone resources and manage the full range of RPA activities. This structure is intended to supply frontline units with advanced aerial monitoring and real-time intelligence for quicker operational decisions.
