WhatsApp is introducing a feature that lets users connect without sharing personal phone numbers. The Meta-owned service announced usernames this week, with the full rollout planned for later in the year.

Usernames will work as follows. Account holders can reserve a preferred name starting this week, ahead of the official launch later in 2026. Reservations are open now and take only moments to complete.

Services such as Signal and LINE have long offered usernames so users can keep phone numbers private. The option helps people contact businesses, arrange deliveries or reach service providers without risking unwanted calls or messages.

WhatsApp will soon allow connections through both phone numbers and usernames.

Users decide who can see their username. An optional username key, consisting of numbers shared during creation, further controls access. There will be no public directory, and the service will not suggest usernames. People must know the exact handle and key to make first contact.

Reservations are also available in the WhatsApp Business app.

Once usernames launch, a new contact will not see a phone number if the sender has enabled the feature, WhatsApp stated. Phone numbers remain required for account registration, yet users may choose to communicate only via usernames.

To reserve a name, update the app, go to Settings, then Account, and select Username. Letters, numbers and limited special characters are allowed. A generator tool is provided if needed. Taken names cannot be registered.

Businesses and creators may claim matching Instagram or Facebook usernames when eligible.

Some users have raised concerns about scams involving fake usernames. WhatsApp said multiple protections exist, including username keys, contact limits, automated abuse detection and reporting tools. Celebrity and official names will receive extra monitoring.

The feature will be introduced gradually over the coming months.
