The government has sent a formal notice to Meta regarding child sexual exploitative and abuse material appearing in paid Instagram advertisements, sources said on Sunday. The notice was issued on Saturday evening. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology directed Instagram to remove all ads and content that promote or enable access to such material, the sources added. The ministry also requested a detailed response within seven days. Meta has been summoned following a report on the spread of child sexual abuse material advertisements on the platform. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw instructed ministry officials to call in Meta over Instagram ads promoting child sexual abuse material in India.
