As the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections near, the Congress party confronts deepening internal divisions that risk overshadowing its electoral preparations. An initial discussion over state leadership has developed into a broader factional conflict, creating a significant organizational challenge for the central leadership in Punjab.
Several senior Congress figures are viewed as potential chief ministerial candidates, increasing the stakes around the Punjab Congress president role, which has become central to internal power dynamics.
The latest tensions emerged after recent local body elections. The party performed well in regions associated with former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, but results were weaker in areas linked to Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring. This prompted a section of leaders to push for his replacement.
The central leadership avoided immediate changes after multiple rounds of consultations and reviews, including assessments by Bhupesh Baghel and a committee led by Ajay Maken. It opted to retain Warring while distributing key roles among senior figures to balance ambitions and ensure representation across major communities such as Jat Sikhs, Dalit Sikhs and Hindus.
Channi was named chairman of the Campaign Committee, a position often seen as indicating the party’s informal chief ministerial face in opposition. Other leaders received positions on various election-related panels.
These measures have not fully eased discontent. Channi, who sought the state presidency, met with supporters after the appointments, indicating ongoing friction. Baghel was sent to Chandigarh for five days to address the situation, including convening meetings of the new committees during a planned statewide yatra.
Some dissident leaders have reportedly stayed away from these meetings, an action that echoes earlier defiance seen in Rajasthan and could be interpreted as a challenge to central authority.
Critics highlight the party’s 2022 election defeat under Channi and past allegations against him. Supporters note wider dissatisfaction involving leaders such as Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Vijender Singla. Randhawa’s recent meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a social media post by Channi showing unity among several leaders have added further complexity. Warring responded by reposting the image to emphasize unity.
The coming period will test the Congress high command’s ability to manage these divisions in Punjab.
