Martinez, appointed in 2023, could not lead the squad to the title. A late goal by Mikel Merino ended Portugal’s campaign and the hopes of veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo.
Martinez stated that the cycle had concluded and a new voice was required. He explained that remaining after failing to win the tournament would not be appropriate. He expressed gratitude for the memories from his three and a half years in charge, calling the role the experience of his lifetime.
The contest featured numerous scoring opportunities for both teams. Substitutes Ferran Torres and Merino combined in stoppage time to secure Spain’s victory. The match began with several early attempts, including efforts from Mikel Oyarzabal and Joao Cancelo. Portugal created chances through Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo, yet Unai Simon made key saves. Spain maintained greater possession and generated more shots before the break.
After halftime, Portugal earned free kicks but could not convert them. Ronaldo had further opportunities that went wide. The deadlock ended when Merino scored from a pass by Torres, eliminating Portugal from the competition.
