The Railway Ministry has approved recruitment of 4,098 technical staff across zones to enhance safety and operational efficiency. The posts cover 35 technical categories, including junior engineers, depot material superintendents, and chemical and metallurgical assistants. A ministry circular to all zonal general managers stated the move followed a review of vacancies reported through the internal Human Resource Management System. The ministry has asked recruitment boards to issue centralised employment notifications from July 21, 2026. The largest number of vacancies is in the Permanent Way category with 845 posts, followed by 470 in Works and 450 in Carriage and Wagon. Zonal railways must finish internal checks and apply reservation rules for SC, ST, OBC and EWS categories before uploading final lists. A separate notification for 6,565 technicians, including signal and technician grade III posts, was issued earlier. Railway unions welcomed the decision, noting it would reduce workload and strengthen safety. Union leaders said the recruitment followed protests by signal and telecom staff and called for further hiring to match network expansion.
