Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during a three-day trip to Australia, held talks with Opposition Leader Angus Taylor on July 10, 2026, focusing on bilateral relations, the Ministry of External Affairs reported. The two sides reviewed progress in the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Officials described the session as productive and noted broad cross-party backing in Australia for closer links with India. Modi also shared on social media that the conversation highlighted expanding cooperation and future prospects. He arrived in Australia on July 8 following his stop in Indonesia and plans to proceed to New Zealand, completing a six-day tour of three countries. During the Australia visit, the nations concluded multiple agreements covering civil nuclear energy, maritime security and critical minerals. Modi conducted formal talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, stressing the partnership’s importance for a stable Indo-Pacific region. Defence cooperation, particularly at sea, received special attention. An accord on civil nuclear energy was finalised after more than two years, enabling Australian uranium supplies for Indian power plants. Both sides agreed to advance negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement and an investment protection pact. Eighteen documents were signed, including statements on defence, maritime security, energy and technology supply chains. Modi urged swift conclusion of the economic agreement to boost trade and investment. He also spoke at a community event in Melbourne attended by Albanese.
