Heavy rain has continued to cause problems in Ghaziabad, where two children died in separate drowning incidents within 24 hours due to widespread waterlogging from the monsoon. The most recent case happened on Friday when a seven-year-old boy drowned in a rainwater-filled pit near Loni, one day after a three-year-old girl died in a flooded lane in the city.
The boy, named Polu, lived with his family in a slum area near Milak village in the Ankur Vihar police station jurisdiction. Police said he had been missing since Thursday evening. His body was discovered on Friday afternoon in a pit filled with rainwater that had been dug for road work.
The child was taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Police have opened an investigation.
Residents claimed the open construction pit, filled by ongoing rains, created a hazard. The death has left the family in grief and raised new worries about safety during the monsoon.
This marks the second such fatality in 24 hours. A day earlier, a three-year-old girl drowned in accumulated water in Ghaziabad’s Vijay Nagar area. Her death prompted protests over poor drainage and lack of civic action.
The incidents have heightened concerns about heavy rainfall across Ghaziabad and the NCR. Persistent showers have led to severe waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and daily life difficulties.
Heavy rain also caused a road to collapse in Ghaziabad’s Vasundhara Sector, damaging parked vehicles. No injuries occurred.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted more heavy rain in Delhi-NCR over the next few days. Residents have called on authorities to improve drainage, secure construction sites, and take steps to prevent further monsoon tragedies.
