Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to New Zealand prompted an unexpected diplomatic message from South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. The South Korean leader offered good wishes after New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon posted a video greeting the Indian leader upon arrival in Auckland on Friday.

Modi replied promptly with appreciation, noting that such thoughtful messages from friends are always valued.

Lee’s comment responded to Luxon’s social media post, which included footage of the New Zealand leader meeting Modi at the airport after Air India One landed.

In his reply, Lee expressed hopes for friendship and progress between India and New Zealand, repeating the sentiment to show support for closer relations during the visit.

Luxon had earlier welcomed Modi on X with a short message and a video of the two leaders shaking hands and embracing.

Modi’s arrival represents the first state visit by an Indian prime minister to New Zealand in over four decades. The two-day trip, hosted at Luxon’s invitation, seeks to strengthen bilateral relations.

It follows Luxon’s March 2025 visit to India and comes after the signing of the India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement.

During the stay, Modi and Luxon plan talks on trade, investment, defence and economic cooperation, while assessing current ties and exploring further collaboration.

Modi will also meet business and sports figures and address the Indian community.

He described the three-nation tour as advancing India’s Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR Vision and support for a free and open Indo-Pacific. The New Zealand leg follows engagements in Australia and Indonesia.
