France are not afraid of Spain ahead of their World Cup semifinal on Tuesday, defender Ibrahima Konate said on Sunday, though they recognize the opponents’ quality and strong defensive record. Spain have allowed just one goal throughout the tournament while advancing to the final four in pursuit of a second World Cup title. France, champions in 2018 and runners-up four years later, are familiar with Spain after defeats in the Euro 2024 semifinals and last year’s Nations League semifinals. “You cannot fear anyone,” Konate told reporters. “We will prepare as best as possible and hope the result favors us.” He added that Spain are an exceptional side with many talented individuals, so France will not focus on any single player despite Lamine Yamal’s abilities. Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba have started in central defense as the favorites aim for a fifth World Cup final. France have reached four of the last seven finals. Konate stressed the team remains humble and focused only on the present task. They must find a way to penetrate Spain’s effective defense while limiting threats on the flanks. Fellow defender Maxence Lacroix echoed the respect for Spain’s form, noting their strong results and quality players, but affirmed France’s determination to win.
