OpenAI is developing an AI-powered speaker designed to deliver smart home services, according to a Bloomberg report citing anonymous sources. The company has not confirmed the project. The device lacks a display but includes moving parts and uses ChatGPT to offer personalized services. It can reportedly learn user preferences from consumed media to create a tailored experience. OpenAI has previously explored physical applications for its AI models. In 2025, CEO Sam Altman announced a collaboration with designer Jony Ive, and the company acquired Ive’s startup io. While firms develop AI hardware such as glasses, pendants and smart home devices, many functions remain easier and cheaper on smartphones. Concerns persist about paywalled AI features and rising subscription costs. The news emerges as OpenAI and Apple engage in a legal dispute, with Apple accusing OpenAI of stealing trade secrets and attempting to recruit its employees. OpenAI has denied the claims. Altman stated he respects Apple as a top-tier company.
