Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit against a user of its Grok AI chatbot. The complaint alleges that a U.S. resident violated the company’s Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy by generating sexual deepfakes and child sexual abuse material.
The defendant, identified as South Carolina resident Terry Wayne Harwood, 67, was previously arrested in February on child sexual exploitation charges. The suit claims Harwood used deceptive prompts to bypass Grok’s safeguards and converted non-sexual photos into explicit images without consent. It further states that images of minors were used to produce obscene content.
xAI’s action signals its intent to pursue users who misuse the system. Separately, five anonymous plaintiffs have sued xAI and Stability AI, asserting that the technology enabled the creation of CSAM from their childhood photographs. The plaintiffs described emotional distress and ongoing safety concerns.
