The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the central and Delhi governments to arrange daily clinical and general monitoring of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk’s health and to deliver prompt medical care if his condition worsens. A bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia issued the order while considering a public interest petition that sought urgent steps to protect the activist, who is fasting indefinitely at Jantar Mantar. The bench questioned the Solicitor General about existing arrangements for checking the activist’s health. The Solicitor General replied that daily examinations were already taking place. The court stated that government doctors should conduct regular checks and that authorities must act on medical advice whenever treatment is needed. It recorded the government’s assurance that any required intervention to prevent further decline would be carried out. The bench noted that every citizen’s life is valuable and that officials must work to preserve it. The petition was then closed. Filed by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini, the plea highlighted the activist’s weakening state after weeks without food and asked for immediate judicial steps to protect his life. It cited a recent report showing significant weight loss and argued that continued inaction could amount to abetment of suicide under the new criminal law. The petition called for hospital transfer and, if necessary, forced administration of nutrients through a liquid diet. Mr. Wangchuk began the strike on June 28 to press demands related to the education system and the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
