In a significant legal move, the Calcutta High Court has directed the immediate arrest of a Bengal and Delhi Capitals cricketer. Justice Saugata Bhattacharya issued warrants to Mogra Police Station in Hooghly, instructing officers to also detain a second individual linked to the matter.
The directives follow grave accusations from a medical student, who has charged the pair with rape, physical assault, and criminal intimidation.
Claims of Extortion and Privacy Breaches
The complainant reported being sexually exploited under a false promise of marriage. She stated that she and the cricketer had maintained a relationship for three years. Tensions arose last year, after which he reportedly withdrew and declined to wed her.
In addition to assault claims, the victim said the accused extorted her by threatening to release intimate images and videos online. Her lawyer told the court that these private photos remain on the suspects’ devices, prompting fears they may have used similar methods against others.
Court Orders Confiscation of Devices
To safeguard the complainant’s privacy and preserve evidence, the Calcutta High Court mandated the prompt seizure of electronic devices from both individuals. The court stressed the need to secure the items quickly to prevent any transfer or loss of material.
The case, filed as Mogra PS FIR No. 346/2026, covers non-bailable offences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. No representatives appeared for the accused at the hearing.
Although the cricketer has previously rejected the claims, police informed the court that efforts to find and detain the suspects continue. The High Court requested a detailed update on the arrests and set the next hearing for August 11.
The 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter rose in domestic cricket as successor to Wriddhiman Saha for the Bengal side.
