Market trading has become notably more appealing to young professionals. Increasing numbers of market traders now possess a master’s degree, PhD or medical doctorate, reflecting how British markets draw a fresh wave of educated entrepreneurs. Data indicates one in five traders holds such qualifications, pointing to an unexpected shift away from conventional careers. Figures from Kerb, the street food group operating several London markets, reveal nearly three-quarters of its founders are university graduates. Roughly one in four possess postgraduate degrees, and about 95 percent operate their ventures full time. Those entering the field include solicitors, architects, bankers, nurses and PhD students. Joe Harrison, chief executive of the National Market Traders Federation, which conducted the study, noted these are full-time career choices by educated individuals who previously would not have considered market trading. The change has occurred over the past two to three years. Harrison described the numbers as striking, contrasting with earlier patterns where young traders were mainly school leavers and professionals arrived later in life after redundancy. He linked the trend to uncertain employment prospects, observing that graduates now seek independent opportunities in markets that offer adaptable, future-proof roles. Research by the Federation of Small Businesses shows almost two-thirds of 18- to 34-year-olds aspire to run their own business. One example is 23-year-old Amara Iqbal, who completed an MBA in May and intends to grow her henna enterprise through markets. She described trading as more engaging than standard employment, citing daily variety and lessons in adaptability and customer relations. Harrison added that markets allow entrepreneurs to test concepts directly with customers before larger commitments. The federation’s Young Traders Market campaign, started in 2013, has generated over 9,000 trading spots and supported more than 700 businesses, now receiving over 1,000 annual registrations from those aged 16 to 30.
