An Indian woman who left the United States after losing her visa status now works in Germany and is considering a return to India. Ananya Joshi arrived in the US in 2022 for a master’s degree in biotechnology at Northwestern University in Illinois. She graduated in 2024 and worked on F-1 OPT status at a salary of $75,000 a year. Her employer had promised to sponsor an H-1B visa but later said it could not complete the required E-Verify process. With her OPT set to expire in July 2025, Joshi resigned in May 2025 to focus on job applications. She received two offers, one in Germany and one in Canada. She chose Germany for its labor protections and moved in January to Rostock, a small city north of Berlin, to work at a lab-grown meat startup. Life in the smaller German city differs from her experiences in New Delhi and Chicago. Rostock offers cleaner air, safer streets, walkable areas, a beach, and a scenic train, yet it lacks entertainment options and easy international connections. English is used at work, but daily life requires German. Joshi’s boyfriend remains in the United States. She is uncertain about returning there due to past visa difficulties and is instead exploring opportunities in Mumbai or Bangalore, where she sees strong career growth potential.
